Speaking on Tuesday, Mohamed Sadak Azimifar said on Tuesday, during the opening ceremony of projects aimed at diversifying the fuel portfolio, by the end of the Iranian year 1403 (March 20, 2025), an estimated 71 % of the petroleum products (about 185 million people will be consumed) in The transportation sector, with an annual growth rate of about 7 %.
He attributed part of the growing consumption in the transport sector to natural growth and part of the weaknesses in implementing structural energy policies. Azimifar stressed that 53 % of the country’s fleet in the country is outdated, and these old vehicles are consumed two to three times more than the global average.
The Deputy Minister of Oil indicated that the diversification of the fuel portfolio in the transport sector was not sufficiently addressed. He pointed out that in 2020, the Higher Energy Council approved a document specifying energy supplies for the transportation sector until 2041.
According to this document, the CNG share in the transport fuel portfolio was expected to reach 23 % by 2041. However, compressed natural gas consumption decreased from 23 million cubic meters (12 % class) in the first half of 2021 to about 19 million meters. Cube (6.5 % share) in the first half of 2024.
Azimifar pointed out that the low focus on CNG was a major factor in its decrease in the fuel portfolio. He added: “Fortunately, with active policies and colleagues’ efforts, we started projects such as free transfer of public fleets, operating new stations, and building 100 new CNG stations throughout the country.”
