Iran and Pakistan enhance comprehensive military cooperation: Bagheri

Baqeri made these remarks in Islamabad, where he arrived on Sunday at the head of a high-level military delegation at the invitation of Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir.

“Relations between the Iranian and Pakistani armed forces have developed in recent years and we have reached good agreements,” Bagheri told reporters, according to Press TV.

He referred to the security issues within the long border between Iran and Pakistan, and added that the two countries are working to transform the common border areas into “a border of friendship between the two countries and a place for broad economic ties.”

The commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard stressed that “Iran and Pakistan are two major Islamic countries in the sensitive region of West and South Asia, and they have broad relations with each other.”

He said that Tehran and Islamabad have a common position on many issues that occurred in the region over the past year.

Bagheri indicated that the talks with Pakistani officials will focus on regional developments so that the two neighboring countries can adopt a coordinated position in various international circles.

Iranian and Pakistani officials are scheduled to discuss improving defense cooperation, especially in border areas and combating terrorism, in addition to the latest developments in the region and the Islamic world.

Senior political, military and security officials also plan to discuss previously signed agreements between the two neighboring countries.

Senior Iranian military leaders are scheduled to hold talks with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, and Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif.
