WELLSVILLE — Night 1 of the calendar’s new men’s volleyball campaign officially arrived on Friday. The night saw Cuba Rashford defend the Allegany County League crown and the league’s newest player, Allegany Limestone, on the court for the first time. Standing, the Lions of Wellsville hosted the Friendship/Sio in the season opener. .
In the early days, both Friendship/Scio and Wellsville were on the move, pushing points back and forth between each other. Each team had chances for a run along the way, but in the end the important ones were collected by the Lions, who stopped the opposition and built a lead in the second set. 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 over Sio to take his first straight sets victory of the season.

To start the match, Wellsville (1-0) started off with a huge first lead of eight points led by some excellent serve from the back line. Allegany — It wasn’t easy, but the County League’s newest team made its presence known on Friday in the first-ever volleyball game in school history.
With Genesee Valley/Belfast in town, the two teams went back and forth with wins in each of the first two sets. The action then tightened down the homestretch as both of the rest of the set forced extra serves. 25-21, 21-25, 26-24, 27-25 counts.
Pacing Genesee Valley/Belfast (0-1) was Kanaan Sullivan with 10 kills, the team’s most. With Jackson Stout in front of the net he scored five blocks to help the defense and Shawn Mahon back from his line he scored three of his aces.
