The Iranian Ministry of Interior spokesman announced that the meeting of interior ministers of the member states of the Economic Cooperation Organization will be held in Tehran on October 27 and 28.
Ali Zinevand said that the meeting will be held in line with the policy of participation and development of cooperation pursued by the administration with neighboring and allied countries after a 15-year hiatus.
He added that the ECO region, with a population of about 500 million people, possesses significant geopolitical, energy and industrial capabilities, making it suitable for forming a free trade agreement or promoting trade liberalization.
The spokesman said that Iran has proposed several initiatives, including the establishment of special free trade zones between some or all member states, as trade liberalization and the removal of customs duties have not yet been achieved in the region.
The Economic Cooperation Organization is a Eurasian political and economic intergovernmental organization founded in Tehran in 1985.
