China did not participate in the management and operation of the Panama Canal, and never interfered in the affairs of the canal. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday that China consistently respects Panama’s sovereignty over the canal and recognizes the canal as a permanently neutral international waterway.
Spokesman Mao Ning made the remarks in response to US President Donald Trump’s statement about “restoring” the Panama Canal.
Mao said that China agrees with Panamanian President Jose Raul Molino’s statement that Panama’s sovereignty and independence are non-negotiable, and that the canal is not subject to the control of any major power, directly or indirectly.
